- In about 1910 the concventional binoculars were adopted for close focus observation. Some 20 years later this type of instrument was used in medicine in the form of the colposcope for gynaecological examination and for ENT procedures. This example, made by Beck of London, was one of the earliest of this type in Edinburgh to be used as an operating microscope.
