- Petit's tourniquet, c.1775, steel screw with kid skin horse-hair filled pads and cotton canvas straps. Used in combination with a long surgical knife and bone saw, the tourniquet was an essential piece of equipment for carrying out amputations. It was applied above the point of an amputation in order to limit the blood supply and therefore prevent the patient losing too much blood.
