Rib with cervical rib malformation
GC.9195
A macerated right first rib, taken from an adult dissecting-room subject, showing synostosis with a seventh cervical rib.
The neck of each rib is well formed and the tubercle is well developed though surface destruction has partially obliterated the articular surface of each. About 2 cm from its commencement, the cervical rib fuses with the first thoracic rib. In consequence of the fusion the first rib is unusually broad but on its superior surface the identity of the cervical rib can be traced to the anterior extremity where it projects as a flattened, smooth, rounded process, making with the first thoracic rib a smooth, regular notch.
