- Mandible, giant-cell tumour
- GC.4406
- Wet specimen and histology slides x3 Left half of a mandible, showing a giant-cell tumour. Removed by operation from a male aged 12 years in whom the tumour was said to have been of three months duration. The tumour forms a somewhat nodular fleshy mass, covers most of the lingual surface of the left half of the body of the mandible and ascends on the adjacent portion of the ramus to the level of the mandibular foramen. The tumour involves the alveolar border from the left canine tooth to the anterior border of the ramus. Anteriorly the 1st and kind premolar teeth are embedded in the tumour and displaced anteriorly. Posteriorly the tumour has displaced the 2nd molar tooth giving it a posterior and lingual inclination. The tumour is well-defined and overlaps the superior half of the facial aspect of the body of the mandible. Microscopic examination shows a non-malignant giant-cell tumour. The submandibular salivary gland displaced upwards by the tumour is hypertrophied and inflamed. The gum is thickened and infiltrated on its lingual surface.
