Posterior half of a longitudinal section of the ileocolic segment of a bowel, showing intussusception of the vermiform appendix.
From a male aged ¾ years, the subject of intussusception of thirty six hours’ duration, with intermittent abdominal pain and vomiting but no bleeding from the bowel. There was a visible tumour in the left side of the abdomen and on rectal examination the apex of the intussusceptum could be felt. Coeliotomy showed an ileocolic intussusception which was easily reduced and an intussusception of the vermiform process. Only the tip of the vermiform process was visible and as reduction was impossible and the adjacent caecum oedematous, the ileocolic segment was excised. Convalescence was uninterrupted.
The sulcus around the vermiform process on the serous aspect indicates an intussusception 10 mm. in depth and corresponds to a similar protrusion on the mucosal surface of the caecum. The lips of the colic valve are protruding and oedematous.
