SKIN, face. A portion of, with the subjacent tissues, showing anthrax malignus.
From a vanman aged 52 years who developed a small papule on the left side of his neck and on the following day caused abrasion of it by carrying sacks of sugar on his back. Two days later the part became swollen with some constitutional disturbance. As the swelling increased, the centre became black and necrotic and after the lapse of three days the temperature reached 39.5OC (103°F) and the area was excised. Cultures on agar yielded pure bacillus anthracis. The section which includes the deep fascia and part of the underlying muscle, shows on the skin surface an irregular, black patch with a smaller in immediate contact, both of which show some vesication. The skin around the site of innoculation is of a dusky blue colour.
