- Diaphragmatic hernia. Thorax and abdomen showing a left From a female born at term who died immediately after birth. A large tumour.protruded from the abdominal wall to the right of the umbilicus, covered for the most part with trans¬parent membrane. The heart is displaced to the right and the left side of the thorax contains the small intestine and the transverse colon. The tumour at the umbilicus contains the liver, the stomach and the pancreas. The spleen has been displaced medially but is not contained in the tumour. The left half of the diaphragm is defective and there is no sac containing the viscera herniated into the thorax.
