Duplication of ileum
GC.11907
Duplication of ileum, from a male aged 8 weeks.
The specimen, removed at operation, is a loop of ileum bearing a narrow tubular duplication attached to the mesenteric border along most of its length, but at the proximal end forming a diverticulum which deviates at right angles from the duplication and lies between the leaves of the mesentery, from which it was dissected free at operation.
Towards the distal end of the duplication a small perforation has been closed by a suture aid; here congestion and a scanty fibrinous exudate are visible. The distal end has been sectioned to show the interior both of the ileum and the diverticulum.
The red mucosa of the ileum contrasts with the white mucosa of the diverticulum and a muscle stratum lying between these mucosae is clearly visible.
Microscopical examination of sections from the duplication and the diverticulum show that in the former the mucosa is of pure ileal type and that of the diverticulum has ileal villi on the surface and abundant gastric glands in the deeper part. The rest of the wall of both is similar to that of the bowel. The muscular coat that runs between the bowel and the duplication consists of a single layer of circular fibres common on both structures.
