JOINT, interphalangeal, showing chronic arthritis
GC.8468
Phalanges and distal half of the metatarsal bone of the right hallux, showing chronic arthritis of the interphalangeal articulation.
From a male aged 59 years, the subject of old osteomyelitis with subsequent ulceration during twenty years, and latterly carcinoma of the leg.
The metatarsophalangeal articulation is normal. The distal phalanx has a lateral deviation. The head of the proximal phalanx is increased in area in its lateral half by a marginal osteophytic overgrowth. The articular surface of the distal phalanx is surrounded by a collar of new bone which ha extended over the margins of the articular surface of the proximal phalanx and the collar is smooth on its articular but rough on its superficial surface and is more developed on its volar and lateral than on its dorsal and medial surfaces.
