HC.I.30.18
Long forceps.
Both Alexander and James Hamilton, father and son, were professors of Midwifery in Edinburgh. The forceps are usually attributed to James, although Alexander may have initiated them. The forceps are the same shape as Young's, but each has a joint in the handle or shank. The joint is in the right blade and the idea was to facilitate the application of the blade when the patient was in the left lateral position.
Has makers mark on both inner handles 'Young, Leith-Walk, Edin'. The address of the Young business inscribed on the handle means we can date the making of this instrument to between 1808-1820.
