Forceps. Mid-eighteenth century.
Originally used for the extraction of maxialliary molars. The boroque style handles suggests Spanish influence or origin. Seals were added to the cicular ends to convert the forceps into a holder for tapers, or for impressing wax on sealed documents. This conversion was probably carried out before 1814 after which Reiner van Hoorn (whose crest can be seen on the forceps) changed his coat of arms and took the name Westpalm van Hoorn.
