- Massive enlargement of the thyorid of long duration in a man of 61. The thyroid was lobular but showed no fixation. The diagnosis of colloid goitre was made and thyroidectomy was carried out. A large portion of the tumour was retrosternal. Patient made complete recovery. The specimen shows gross enlargement involving both lobes and the isthmus and weight 1270g. The enlargement had been irregular and lobular and external appearance is indicative of nodular colloid goitre and into some of the cysts haemorrhages have occurred. The thyroid has shelled readily from the surrounding tissue. Microscopical examination: A nodular colloid goitre showing focal thyroiditis and areas of hyalinised fibrosis.
