Sir James, son of Sir John Fraser of Tain, was born in Edinburgh and was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Magdalen College, Oxford and Edinburgh University where he graduated MBChB in 1948 and ChM in 1961.
After serving in the army, he returned to Edinburgh where he trained in General Surgery and Urology. In 1958, he was appointed as Consultant Surgeon to the Sarawak government and in 1963 he returned to Edinburgh as Senior Lecturer in Clinical Surgery and Honorary Consultant Surgeon to the Royal Infirmary.
In 1969, he was appointed to the inaugural Chair of Clinical Science in Surgery at the University of Southampton and in 1980 he was appointed as Postgraduate Dean to the Faculty of Medicine at Edinburgh University and Director of the Edinburgh Postgraduate Board for Medicine.
He was Secretary of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 1968 to 1969 and President from 1982 to 1985. He was appointed to the Court of Regents of the College in 1990.
