Der Zahnarzt
HC.J.16.X.70
Oil painting by unknown artist, early 19th century, after Gerrit Dou's painting of 1672.
The scene is presented through a window with the curtains drawn. The operator holds up a tooth extracted from the young patient who holds his hand to his painful gum. The left had of the boy rests on his hat which sits on the table alongside a bleeding-basin, instrument box, and a bottle.
The inscription 'Dou 1672' on the velum on the table, and the stuffed crocodile suspended from the ceiling that appear in the original painting are missing.
