Oil painting on copper by an unknown artist, probably late 18th century, after Der Zahnarzt by Gerrit Dou, but with the background altered.
The scene is presented through a window with the curtains drawn. The operator holds up a tooth extracted from the young patient who holds his hand to his painful gum. The left had of the boy rests on his hat which sits on the table alongside a bleeding-basin, instrument box, and a bottle. a stuffed crocodile can be faintly noted in the background, common to depict places of science.
A vellum is inscribed 'Dou 1672, (the date of the original), and from it an impressive seal is suspended.
