Set of steel scalpels and bistouries in a velvet-lined case, by Young, Edinburgh. Also included is a hook and scoop. All instruments have an ebony handle except the scoop. Presented to Thomas Smith Clouston (1840–1915), the Scottish physichian. The case has an engraved plate on the lid that reads: "Medical School Surgeon's Hall 2nd Senior Prize awarded in Mr. Spence's Class of Surgery To T. S. Clouston Session 1858-59"
