Case of six scalpels

Metal case including six scalpels (space for six more), two by J. Gardner & Son, two by Arnold & Sons. All scalpels are steel and of similar design although the Gardner scalpes have brushed rather than polished handles. The case is made of tin with a brass coating, partly rusted. The lid is inscribed with Arch. Young & Son, Surgical Instrument Maker, while there is also a label on the inside of the lid by J. Gardner & Son with the handwritting: "Mr Jardine 65 Northumberland Street" This possibly refers to Francis Evelyn Jardine (1886-1956), who lectured in Applied Anatomy at Edinburgh University from 1920 to 1950. He was also Surgeon-in-Charge and Senior Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh between 1919 and 1951.
