- An example of oil colour picture printing first introduced in 1835 by George Baxter (1804-1867). After the oil painting by Gerrit Dou (1613-1675), a pupil of Rembrandt. Print by an unknown artist, mid-19th century. The operator is examining the teeth of a patient who is petrified while the latter's wife watches, with a look of worry on her face. In the foreground there is a bleeding bowl, on a shelf in the background there is a skull, jars and a number of instruments hanging from nails. A stuffed crocodile, a typical seventeenth century emblem of science, is suspended from the ceiling.
