- Schimmelbusch mask, plated steel, with felt backed cloth. Ether and chloroform are skin irritants and can cause chemical burns if in direct contact with skin. This mask was designed in the late nineteenth century to deliver anaesthetic in a safer way that kept the chemical soaked cloth away from the skin.
