- Pelvis and spine showing symptoms of osteomalacia The preparation is the pelcis with thespine from C6 downwards, with approx. 5cm of ribs articulated. The bones are very light and have been coated with a red material which has flaked off in many areas The spine shows pronounced kyphosis-scoliosis between vertebrae C6 and T5, while the pelvis has collapsed, causing the inferior ramus of the ischium to form a diamond shape, and the acetabula to face forwards. The coccyx is level with the ischial tuberosity. The likely cause of this is osteomalacia, a softening of the bones caused by impaired bone metabolism, usually down to inadequate levels of Calcium or Vitamin D.
