Plain silver cigarette box with a solid filled lid.
It is inscribed: “To Miss E A Williams RRC With happy recollections of ‘48”. It is also engraved with the facsimile signatures of 51 of the leading doctors of the day, including surgeons such as J R Cameron, WJ Stuart, EL Farquharson, Gertrude Herzfeld; otolaryngologists such as Ion Simson Hall,AB Smith and Ewart Martin; obstetricians E Chalmers Fahmy and Douglas Miller; anaesthetists including John Gillies, Alison Ritchie and DS Middleton who was also an oral surgeon. “48” almost certainly refers to the Nursing Home which Miss Williams ran at 48 Moray Place, Edinburgh.
