- Oesophagus, laid open, showing cicatricial contraction (scarring which leads to contraction). From a female who died of starvation, the result of the accidental ingestion of lye twenty years previously. Some 6 cm in the distal half of the oesophagus is cicatricial at the expense of the mucosa and its underlying muscle fibres. Proximally the oesophagus has undergone dilatation with hypertrophy of the muscular wall.
