Segment of the gastro-oesophageal junction, showing cicatricial stenosis of the oesophagus.
From a female child who died following the accidental ingestion of lye (caustic potash).
Cicatricial stenosis is the narrowing of a duct or tube as the result of scar tissue forming.
The gastric mucosa is normal and 4 cm from the gastro-oesophageal junction. The lumen of the oesophagus is reduced to a narrow channel indicated by a glass rod, by a ring of thickened fibrous tissue which replaces the mucosa.
